HISTORY OF CFUW MISSISSAUGA
The University Alumnae of Port Credit had been attending the Oakville Women's Club for some time, but felt that they wanted a club of their own. On March 23rd, 1953, sixty-five women met at the home of Frances Thompson to form a Port Credit branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women. Dr. Martha Law, National President of CFUW at the time, was guest speaker. By 1956, the membership was 110 and the dues were $5.00 plus 25 cents each meeting.
CFUW Mississauga was chartered in 1953 originally as the Port Credit club. In anticipation of the amalgamation on January 1, 1974, of several towns, villages and townships into a city to be called Mississauga, the club was renamed University Women's Club of Mississauga in 1970.
General meetings were held originally at the First United Church on Lakeshore Road in Port Credit; but when numbers became too great, the club moved to Riverside Public School where they stayed for 13 years. That period was followed by a series of short stays at Woodlands Public School, Queen Elizabeth Senior School, Erindale Secondary School and the Burnhamthorpe Library Theatre until the Club settled at the Erindale Campus of the University of Toronto (now U of T Mississauga).
The relationship with Erindale College started even before the college was open. In 1962, the University Women's Club of Port Credit was asked to investigate the need for a "Peel University" and in 1964, CFUW members did the registration for the first extension course offered for Erindale College and taught in the Board of Education offices in Cooksville. When the College was opened in 1964, CFUW members continued to be involved:
The large scale building and renovation program at the Erindale Campus led to the recent relocation of the Club’s program meetings to Cooksville United Church, and most recently to the Church of St. Bride.

When the College was opened in 1964, CFUW members continued to be involved:
- providing six coffee parties to enable faculty, administration and students of extension courses to meet socially. Surplus from the coffee party fund became the first book prize at Erindale;
- an idea for providing day care for children of students was researched for 6 months in 1967 before being abandoned because of lack of facilities;
- the Club was asked to provide the names of prominent members of the community to serve as Founding Alumnae of Erindale College;
- the start-up and growth of the scholarship plan. In April, 1968, we gave $300 for mature women students in need and a book prize of $50. An added $250 prize in 1973 to the top woman graduate in fourth year was changed to the top women graduate who was continuing her education in Canada. In 1976, the $250 scholarship was increased to $500, in 1977, to $850. Today the annual scholarship for a student at the University of Toronto at Mississauga is $2000. This amount is awarded by the CFUW Mississauga Scholarship Fund.
The large scale building and renovation program at the Erindale Campus led to the recent relocation of the Club’s program meetings to Cooksville United Church, and most recently to the Church of St. Bride.
